At Label Source, we stock a wide range of warning tapes. To the untrained eye, most of these warning tapes look the same, but they are subtly different.
Detectable warning tape is one unique option that has separate properties compared to other tapes. However, why are the detectable warning tape specifications different, and what purpose does the tape serve?
Below, we discuss what detectable warning tape is, how it works and its unique properties and specifications.
What is Detectable Warning Tape?
Detectable warning tape works similarly to other warning tapes but with bright, eye-catching colours. This lends itself well to a variety of underground uses, including:
- Marking sewer ducts
- Signposting underground cables
- Highlighting fuel mains
- Marking street lights and lamps
- Signposting fibre optic cables
So, while other warning tapes are similar, they can’t be seen in troublesome conditions to the same degree as detectable warning tape. For that reason, detectable warning tapes are popular in the water, gas and electric industries.
Detectable Warning Tape Specifications
Usually, detectable warning tape is 3 to 6 inches wide, complete with a foil backing. This foil backing ensures the tape can be found with a metal detector, which helps all sorts of different industries when they’re doing maintenance work.
Often, we’re asked: “how does detectable warning tape work”? Well, the foil backing is integral to answering this question. While the bright colours of the tape are key to it being seen, the metal foil ensures all types of professional metal detectors can pick the tape up, all while leaving the tape underground.
For example, before excavation occurs, the ground is scanned. If a metal detector picks up a signal, then that part of the ground is tested, which would lead to the discovery of fuel mains, fibre optic cables or whatever else the tape has signposted. By having a foil backing, detectable warning tape prevents significant damage and keeps key maintenance workers safe.
Outside of the metal foil backing, detectable underground warning tape is coated in a scratch and chemical-resistant layer, meaning it can function in all types of conditions.
All detectable warning specifications must be signed-off by the UK Civil Engineers organisation and the Department of Transport. These two organisations outline the exact specifications needed before a detectable warning tape product is sold and, at Label Source, our range hits every one of these requirements.
