Back in 2011 a deadly earthquake hit Japan and caused a critical melt down of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. After the Fukushima disaster more than 44,000 people worked to safely take the Fukushima Daiichi offline, while exposing themselves to radiation.
4 years after the disaster doctors have just diagnosed the first case radiation related cancer. It has been announced that the worker has Acute Myelogenous leukaemia, a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. It has been confirmed that the cancer is directly related to the work that he carried out cleaning up the plant.
TEPCO , have outlined all the attempts it has made to limit the account of radiation exposure to their workers during the clean-up missions . This is the first diagnosis of cancer linking directly to the clean-up missions, however, it has been reported that over 400,000 people under the age of 18, in the Fukushima area have thyroid cancer.
